I’ll make this brief. I started Your First Byline because I talked to too many people who didn’t know how to break into the industry.

We can do better. If we want journalism that reflects the country we all live in, we can’t leave it to expensive degree programs and people who have a connection to someone already working.

That’s why I created Your First Byline, to give aspiring journalists the advice that they’d get over coffee from someone in the industry. We’ve featured over 200 journalists in our first year and written the first chapter of a planned book on how to get a job in journalism.

But I need your help. This is a labor of love, but I still need to pay for the time and expenses associated with running it. I’ve dropped the annual subscription to $50 and the monthly subscription to just $5. That gives aspiring journalists access to all of our old stories and extra material at a rate anyone can afford.
